Thoreau And Emerson Comparison Essays - Lecturers,
Thoreau And Emerson Comparison A Comparison of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson's Beliefs Essay written by Kelly Cooper A Comparison of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson's Beliefs concerning Simplicity, the Value and Potential of Our Soul, and Our Imagination. Henry David Thoreau tests Ralph Waldo Emerson's ideas about nature by living at Walden Pond, where he discovers that simplicity in physical aspects brings deepness to our mind, our soul to its fullest potential, and our imagination to be uplifted to change our lives. These two men believe that nature is what forces us not to depend on others' ideas but to develop our own. Nature is ever changing so we must keep searching for explanations about human life. They feel that nature is the key to knowing all. Thoreau lives at Walden Pond to find the true meaning of life. He wants to experience things for himself. Thoreau says, I wanted...to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion (Thoreau 235). He takes Emerson's advice who says, Let us demand our own works and laws and worship (Emerson 215). Emerson tells how modern generations live life vicariously through the stories and traditions foretold. We do not experience things for ourselves. We take what our ancestors and others before us have said and do not think twice about whether we should try things for ourselves. Emerson decides not to conform to modern ways, but to be an individual. Furthermore, in Nature, Emerson says, Standing on the bare ground - my head bathed by the blithe air and uplifted into infinite space - all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eyeball (Emerson 215). Here, he is saying that being in such a simple environment he is able to see things more clearly. He has deeper thoughts. Like Emerson, Thoreau also wanted to live a simple life, in order to find deeper meaning in life. Thoreau says, I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartanlike as to put to rout all that was not life, ... and reduce it to its lowest terms (Thoreau 235). Thoreau also says, We do not ride on the railroad; it rides upon us (Thoreau 237). This means that some things which we believe make our lives simpler actually make it more complicated. Both Emerson and Thoreau believe that in order to find deep meaning in life, you must live simply. In addition to living simply, both men believe in the value of the soul. Thoreau goes to the woods to contemplate life and to get in touch with his soul He wants to get in touch with his soul. He wants to, get the whole and genuine meanness of it (Thoreau 235). Emerson similarly says, the one thing in the world of value is the active soul (Emerson 218). He also tells of the soul's boundless

Race Relations in the New World essays
Race Relations in the New World essays The British colonies in North America were not societies that valued or expected equality. They conquered Native American land without any payment for it and they used African Americans as slaves. By the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, the standard norm for the British included vicious warfare with the Native Americans and enslavement of the African Americans. These practices became the standard norm as a result of carelessness and perhaps fear of change on the part of the British. Early British settlements in North America established first contact between the British and the Native Americans. Almost twenty years after the mysterious disappearance of the colonists who settled at Roanoke, the British settled In the Chesapeake Bay area in the early 17th century. They called it Jamestown in honor of their king, James I. Shortly after settling in Jamestown, a group of about two hundred Native Americans attacked the British because the British were trying to exploit Native American labor and wealth. The British saw nothing wrong with holding a peaceful social state but at the same time using Native Americans as a cheap form of labor. Although the Native Americans had supplied the British with food and other vital necessities, tensions still persisted. The British and the Native Americans interacted very often in trade surroundings, but the failure of each group to understand and accept the other group's culture prevented any lasting cooperation between the two groups. Simple misunderstandings during a trade agreement could turn into violent confrontations as a result of the large difference in culture and beliefs. In March 1622, one Native American by the name of Opechancanough planned a surprise attack on Jamestown. Intending to wipe out the whole colony, his plan was only partially successful as a result of British retaliation which killed more Native Americans than they did British. Afte...

Analysing Of The Riba Work Stages
Analysing Of The Riba Work Stages On each of the initial work stages of a project the architect is involved in many ways and uses many skills. Before the architect begins any work they must be appointed under the RIBA concise conditions agreement or SW 99. The following is a brief outline of what an architect does in a RIBA standard agreement between architect and client. The first two RIBA work stages come under term ââ¬ËPreparationââ¬â¢ in the ââ¬ËRIBA, Outline Plan of Work 2007ââ¬â¢. The first stage is stage A, ââ¬ËAppraisalââ¬â¢; this mainly involves establishing the needs of the client. Three main tasks are carried out. Throughout the initial stages of the project constant communication between the architect and client takes place. Firstly, the architect must carry out studies to determine the feasibility of the Clientââ¬â¢s requirements. The architect may also review the alternative design and construction approaches and the cost implications of each with the client. At this stage the arch itect may also provide information for reports on the cost implications. During stage B (Design Brief) the initial ââ¬ËStatement of Requirementsââ¬â¢ is developed into the ââ¬ËDesign Briefââ¬â¢. Although this is the responsibility of the client the architect often contributes to its development additionally. Stages C, D and E come under the heading ââ¬ËDesignââ¬â¢. This begins with Stage C (Concept), where the architect would usually be required to prepare outline proposals for things, such as, the building structure and building services. The architects also develop concept designs for project. Throughout this stage the architect will be leasing with other members of the team, such as, engineers, quantity surveyors and planning supervisors. This communication helps the architect to provide the client with information on approximate construction costs and cost planning which must then be assessed by the client in the stage report. Stage D (Design Development) invol ves the completion of the project brief and the further development of the concept designs. At this stage a cost estimate, or information for a cost estimate, must be provided and the architect will be working closely with statutory planning authorities, for instance, local planning departments. The architect must also prepare a detailed planning application, including drawings and an ââ¬ËAccess and Design Statementââ¬â¢. At the end of stage D the architect must obtain signed approval by the client of a stage D report (this is broadly outlined in Task 3). The Shirebrook Academy has just seen the completion of this stage and has now been submitted to planning. b) Involvement by the architectural technologist in the science and technology of the building, rather than the creative and artistic side, is the main difference between the work of the architect and the architectural technologist. Many of the tasks undertaken overlap with the work of the architect and a strong collabora tion exists. For example, when working on stages C and D both architect and architectural technologist may work together on developing the project brief and design programme, each contributing specific skills to the project. The architectural technologist may contribute by evaluating and advising upon environmental strategies and material specification, while the architect may work on spatial relationships and movement path diagrams.

Global Local Debates Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Global Local Debates - Essay Example There are many factors that contribute to the choice of design, these should, in critical regionalism, include the regional aspect and identity as well as the standard views of light, space and materials. In Los Angeles, supermodernisation has occurred as both an altercation of the cultural differences that occur in the area from the impact of globalising forces, where design is subdued by political forces, commercialisation, and economisation of the region. To this, some believe that the critical regionalism is a construct of postmodern design that furthers the aspect of cultural growth, while others believe that the supermodernisation has inhibited the process of regional identification. In Latin America, the hybridisation of global forces into the definitive region has altered the architecture to become less dignified as an inherently cultural aspect, but more so as a liquefied representation of the homogeneity that has occurred. The concept of critical regionalism is at once tempting and cautionary, where in supermodernisation there is the removal of special regional identity, but use of regional imagery serves to protect the cultural values, however, as seen in the hybridisation of Latin America, this can also serve to dissolve the identification of a culture. Both arguments are presented from the sociological viewpoint of architectural design in the following presentation. There is a thought in homogenisation as a classic humanity issue to retain identity in the face of globalisation, although it is important to note that globalisation and homogenisation are not the same, globalisation is more an apex of the latter, and homogenisation is the accumulation. The transmission of culture has the concern of maintaining inherent dynamics, especially in small pockets of communities, as global realities reproduce and intermix with

Zorba the Greek Essay Example for Free
Zorba the Greek Essay The narrator has been cumulating knowledge for decades, but finally realizes that only emotions can ââ¬Ëcatalyzeââ¬â¢ it and turn passive knowledge into active. Another significant spiritual belief, expressed by Zorba and at first rejected by the narrator is freedom, including the absence of redundant social bonds. Zorba has ââ¬Ëworkedââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"quarrier, miner, pedlar, potter, comitadij, santuri-player, passa tempo hawker, blacksmith, smugglerâ⬠(Kazantzakis, 1953, p. 47). In addition, he spent several years in prison, committed cruel crimes (killed people of other ethnicities like Turks and Kurds). In addition, he used to simplify his social problems and therefore find correspondingly easy solutions: ââ¬Å"All the problems which we find so complicated or insoluble he cuts through as if a sword, like Alexander the Great cutting the Gordian knotâ⬠(Kazantzakis, 1953, p. 48). On the contrary, the narratorââ¬â¢s commitment to society is unquestionable, as he at first characterizes Zorbaââ¬â¢s life as ââ¬Å"primitive boldnessâ⬠(Kazantzakis, 1953, p. 48) and therefore seeks to preserve his reputation. Thus, he believes that humans freedom in social interactions should cause no harm to the personââ¬â¢s reputation. To sum up, the author suggests that the combinations of Zorbaââ¬â¢s and narratorââ¬â¢s beliefs is likely to create a socially productive and committed personality, who, however, realizes their own freedom and can allow emotions drive his acts sometimes. Although the writing suggests that Zorba as a self-sufficient and to great extent asocial personality hasnââ¬â¢t altered after a number of sincere dialogues with his Boss, the narrator, after the philosopherââ¬â¢s death, feels Zorbaââ¬â¢s worldview has penetrated deeply into his consciousness and shaped a new lifestyle. The refinement of the narratorââ¬â¢s image and the establishment of reasonable balance between his former beliefs and Zorbaââ¬â¢s ground-breaking teachings indicate that the lifestyle should be approached holistically, since, in human beliefs, such natural harmonies as those existing between body and soul or between mind and emotion are the fundamental preconditions to the true fulfillment. (Wisped) Our pride in their self-reliance may make it difficult to ask for help, but then again we don't need help. Our generation love being there for themselves in everything, they love to obtain success by themselves, and they are so self-reliant. Spencer and Emily parents always pressures them to be great and do things that they claimed as valuable and important. With so much positive/negative reinforcement from their parents and other authority figures, Spencer and Emily are so confident about the future. They want to prove their parents that they can do better all by themselves, and they want to do it individually. Without the help of their parents, families, or authority figure, and they pass through weird situations just to prove their individualism. ââ¬Å"l know what was doing when I got myself into this, and I don't need any help from you mom, I will get myself out of the situationâ⬠. (Emily).Aria and Hanna also proved t o their parents that they are great and responsible kids. Hanna mom left her alone in her house, when she went to jail for a crime she did not commit and she told Hanna ââ¬Å"Go and stay with Emily and her mom until get outâ⬠Hanna respond was ââ¬Å"No mom! I can take care of myself, just do the same and hurry and leave that cellâ⬠. Karl a 17 year old I spoke to about Pretty Little liars told me ââ¬Å"I love watching that movie because sometimes feel like Spencer, Hannah, Emily, and Aria are my friends. Okay, I admit -? feel like that all the time. But it's not my fault theft the coo lest girls know, they makes me want to strive for greatness and be individualistic as possibleâ⬠Regardless of our differences we are all the same. Our generation is the Ernst diverse generation ever, unlike the older generation. Each character on the show has their own fashion style. You Eve got Aria who is hipster chic, and believe in arts. Spencer who is a walking J Crew ad, and an over achiever. Emily who is plain and boring, but also athletic, and Hanna who is trendy. Each of the character comes from a different background and cultures, but they are still friends. They all managed, worked together and tolerated each other diversity. Spencer mom was mad that she was friends with Aria just because Aria had a ink dye in her hair. She said ââ¬Å"Spencer that girl is not a very great friend for you, and who allows their 15 year old daughter dye her hairâ⬠. However; Spencer still maintain her friendship with Aria, because we make decisions for ourselves and we tolerate any f orm of diversity. Eric I guy talked to said that he watch pretty little liars with his sisters because, ââ¬Å"The name of the movie made me think it was a female movie, but it is really great, and It is very diverse, and the gender roles are not too many but I love it a lot.

Bullying and Individual Person
Argumentative Essay on Bullying Bullying is a constant problem in schools today. It starts off with annoying comments, but esculates up to more severe matters. A lot of us have seen it happen, and a lot of us know how it feels. No one likes being bullied. People look at it as ignorant kids, but bullies are truly criminals, stealing other human-beings self-esteem and at times people end their lives. First of all, bullying is a crime, because of the serious effects and impact it can have on a individual person. And once a person has been robbed of their self-esteem they can suffer from mental and physical problems, drop out of school and mabey even comiit suicide. Many people today can still recall them humiliating days at the hands of their class bully, mainly because bullies usually donââ¬â¢t operate alone. They usually sycophantic the person which means(making their victims attempt to win them over or be a personal flunky so they would stop bullying them.Bullies are everywhere in sm all communities, big communities, parks, mall, streets, but most of all bullies are found at school. Bullies gain control over other kids by physical attacks, punching, kicking and choking for instance. Another form of control is emotional attacks like insults, name calling, spreading rumors and threats. Social attacks are a form of bullying that singlr out kids in of groups of others. The horrible events can start for many reasons including jelousy, gender bias or rasicm;it isnââ¬â¢t right. They terrorize and and harass their victims, ripping apart their self-esteem and attacking their insecurities until the unthinkable happen; violence or even tragic. People often think that bullies donââ¬â¢t see the effects of their actions, or that they donââ¬â¢t understand what they are doing to others. The thing is, bullies donââ¬â¢t understand what they are doing. Whether the bullies are kids are adults, they know its wrong. Bullying someone is abuse. What are we to do, send half of Americ ans to jail?Half of American kids wont end up in jail because they have other alternatives. For instance, bullies could be required to do community service, thearopy, or be shown a prison to show them what they future could be. In addition, parents, schools, and kids need to work together. The problems wont resolve on their own. We need to look at the facts of each situation and take the right hand to solve the problems right. We need to stand up to bullies and not them rip us out our self-esteem.Bullies must face some kind of consequence for all the tortur they did. What I would do is take them to Louisiana state prison and let them see what a real bully life is like. When I interviewed a student who got bullied a few times, he said he really didnââ¬â¢t care what happen to the bully, he just wished he wasnââ¬â¢t born. Thatââ¬â¢s the type of ways some bully victims feel, which is bad. So we got to stop this. I think one good trip to Louisiana state prison would be rally good for each bully we catch. It would show them what a real bully is.

As a result, good management practices should be part of providing cost-effective care to the community. The nursing profession is effective in providing primary care to the community. Even though the practice dates to the 19th century, its significance emerged in the previous decade as a result of changing demographics and global environment. It compliments health care policies through comprehensive nursing assessment, monitoring progress and early intervention. Additionally, it facilitates referrals and social support services such as education to promote self-reliance among people at risk. It combines biophysical, psychological, social knowledge and experience to develop capacity in health care provision. Therefore, the role of public health nursing is changing from contemporary generalist services to specialized and advanced roles in dealing with shifts in demographics, sociological and cultural factor s that affect the health of the community.

Aspects of power in organisations Literature review
Aspects of power in organisations - Literature review Example Based on this context, it is evident that the consideration of organisational politics can offer a basis for challenging the existing paradigm (Sparks, Faragher & Cooper 2001, p. 503). This paper seeks to report the existing literature on power in the context of a noteworthy branch of organisation management, human resource management. The rationale of this paper is informed by the need to raise the profile of the politics of power in HRM. Literature Review The fundamental question that informs this literature review concerns what power has to do with HRM. Reading through HRM textbooks, it quickly becomes clear that power as an idea is rarely examined explicitly (Rigg & Trehan 2004, p. 157). Whenever the issue of power is tackled directly, it is mostly as a question of negotiating power between the organisation and its labour force, the responsibility of empowerment, or the power of organisational leaders to execute punishment or rewards (Ali 2012, p. 983). However, indirectly, power can be termed as an interesting topic in the HRM literature since it prompts the question of the status or influence of HRM as a critical function in organisations. In the context of HRM in organisations, power refers to the deliberate influence over the behaviours, emotions and beliefs of the workforce. However, according to Witt, Andrews & Kacmar (2000, p. 343) power is largely ubiquitous since without power (typified through influence) it is impossible to have cooperation and stability within the organisation. However, by and large, the execution of power often results in problems, which typically stem from the visions of people with power, as well as the way they use their power. Observations have been made regarding the growing significance of HRM in organisations in the last few decades. The human resource (HR) department has become the central figure of organisations, and the question of the influence and role of the HR department has come to the forefront (De Leede & Looise 2005, p. 115). Historical accounts have analysed the emergence of power among HR specialists in organisations, there is no empirical work specifically related to the application of power by HR specialists (Harley & Hardy 2004, p. 378). The ideal of organisations where the entire workforce works collaboratively toward a mutually acceptable goal is common in most HRM rhetoric. However, the reality is quite different since although teamwork is often regarded as one of the most significant organisational virtues, the workplace is often shrouded in demerits such as competition, antagonism and conflict. It is within this context that an in-depth appreciation of influence and power proves essential. All organisations are comprised of individuals with diverse tasks, personal interests and careers (Gotsis & Kortezi 2010, p. 499). According to Sparks, Faragher & Cooper (2001, p. 494) in order to be successful in getting things done, HR specialists need to appreciate the importance of their c apacity to exert influence on the organisationââ¬â¢s entire workforce. In the execution of their power, a vast majority of conventional HRM programs have taken on, whether knowingly or unknowingly, managerialist or functionalist perspectives. Managing typically encompasses the exertion of influence through the use of power. In the contemporary

MGM Resorts International Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
MGM Resorts International - Case Study Example The purpose the case analysis is precisely to determine the best strategic alternative for MGM Resorts International, given the business and general environment in which it operates, and given an analysis of its strengths and weaknesses, the threats to its business, and the opportunities that are present in the market. The paper also presents a plan for implementation of the chosen strategic alternative arising out of the strategic analysis. The firm in focus is properly a holding entity for a number of assets operating in the hospitality industry (Google Finance, 2013; Bloomberg, 2013; MGM Resorts International, 2013). As a holding firm in the hospitality industry, the key business for MGM Resorts International is in the business of owning and operating resorts that are casinos. As such, it is in the business of offering within those casino resorts such services as retail, dining, entertainment, gaming, convention, hotel, and a number of corollary services and activities. Its presen ce is confined to two markets, the US domestic market, where it owns and operates 15 casino resorts throughout the United States, and the China Market, where MGM Macau has ownership of the casino resort known as MGM Macau resort and casino. The company has sole ownership and total control of operations for its US casino resorts, whose casino operations in particular are open the whole year round without pause and for 24 hours everyday, except for its operations at the Grand Victoria, which pause for work two hours out of 24 hours on a daily basis (Google Finance, 2013). Apart from the wholly owned resorts, MGM Resorts International also has 50 percent stakes in three other facilities, chief of them being CityCenter, where the company has half of total ownership stakes in the ARIA Resort and Casino, among other assets. Its MGM China Holdings control 51 percent of the MGM Macau Resort and Casino, apart from new planned developments for a Cotai resort and casino. Its expertise in the h ospitality segment has allowed the holding firm, moreover, to get involved in a vast array of management agreements as well as development agreements for various projects worldwide, involving all kinds of projects outside of casino development as well as projects in casino and resorts development (MGM Resorts International, 2013). Its key bases of operations in the US, meanwhile, are Michigan, Nevada, and Mississippi, with additional stakes in properties in Illinois and Nevada outside of its core interests. In China its base of operations is essentially Macau These properties coupled with consulting and management services make up the totality of its core business offerings to the world (Bloomberg, 2013). A look at its 10-year stock performance shows that MGM Resorts International shares have traded in a relatively narrow band since sharply dropping from its peaks of close to 100 dollars a share in 2007. Current stock prices of about 12.86 dollars a share are within the narrow band that it has been in since that time (Google Finance, 2013) Image Source: Google Finance, 2013 Meanwhile, shorter-term investor sentiments towards the stock shows that many hedge funds and other investors are cautiously long on the stock, and recent developments that indicate some long-term investors such as Kirk Kerkorian are upping their shares in the company by buying more shares are boosting sentiment.
